Most houses tell a story, but this one remembers being interrupted. When I first came to Savannah in 1996, being pulled her after reading Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, I looked at the architecture of this home, and it told a story beyond any scandal ever written about it. Construction on the home began in 1860 for Hugh Mercer, designed by Savannah's master architect, John Norris, based out of New York. Norris loved symmetry, drama and grandeur. But the Civil War interrupted everything, construction froze and the house stood unfinished; waiting, watching as the city changed all around it. And that pause left a mark that you can still feel today.
